Thirteen Reasons Why

Hannah’s words take a major issue on Clay; everything that has occurred to him now takes on new meaning as he ponders a world of complications he never dreamed of. With the new insight on how you never really know a person or people’s lives I think it is safe to say Clay will be more delicate to the world around him. His life may not be as bright, as it could have been prior, but now he has realized things he never took into consideration. This story ends with one word: Skye. One word with such powerful meaning. This words sums up all. From the way Hannah Bakers tape recordings affected Clay and because most of this novel was focused on Clay listening to Hannah voice for what might have been the last time. Skye Miller is yet another girl who Clay Jensen had a crush in middle school. After listening to Hannah Bakers tapes he recognizes Skye’s behavior to Hannah’s. Skye is probably going through something to; maybe like Hannah. Clay realizes that maybe someone who he used to care about has now isolated and withdrawn herself from the world as well as Hannah but this time he wont dismiss it. This is how the story ends. It ends with Clay Jenson passing on the tapes and reaching out to someone else with one simple word. In doing so he may even be saving a life.

            I chose Hannah Baker as a character because sometimes it feels like you’re not going to make it and all you need is that one person to make you feel that way but you also only need that one person to say that you’re worth it. Hannah didn’t have anyone but that does not excuse what she did. That’s not the way out at least that’s not what I believe. I understand she did what she thought was the only thing to do but she deserved a second chance the same type of chance Skye is now going to get. I chose this book because it is a really great book from beginning to end. I really think you should read it. I hope you love it as much as I did.

The beginning of this novel does not start off with Hannah Baker. As a matter of fact it begins with Clay Jensen, one of the people on Hannah Bakers list. As I explained before Hannah Baker killed herself having a plan. She made thirteen stories and seven tapes double sided, along with a map to physically follow as they listen. On these tapes Hannah holds each person listening to these tapes responsible for her suicide. Each person must listen and pass them on to the next person on the list. If anyone fails to pass on these tapes she says a copy of the recordings will be posted public. The tapes have a different effect on Clay, considering he had a crush on her. Clay must listen to why part of this calamity is his fault. Clay is number nine on the tapes. Hannah reassures him that her suicide had nothing to do with him. Clay was actually probably the only good one to Hannah, but is this fair? Clay is not like the others on the tapes…Clay was kind all he did was have mixed feelings for her. Clay wanted desperately to get to know her, and he would have had he seen all the signs. Is it fair he has to carry this burden of all  the others actions?

   Hannah Bakers parents moved into town a couple years back. Hannah Baker was a normal teenage girl. She loved chocolate, blue nail polish, and writing poetry. So what made her change? What made her so… distressed? That’s what these thirteen tapes explain. She desperately explains the pain and nightmare she had throughout high school. I guess that’s why she was so upset, hearing her anxious and disturbed makes it pretty easy to forget that she wasn’t always like this. In the novel we don’t really get to know her, neither did anyone else in this novel. We never found out how she was before these thirteen experiences and we don’t know how she would have felt if she had gotten the help she had been desperately asking for.

In this novel a boy named Clay Jensen receives a box of audio tapes. As the story unravels we learn the tapes are from a young girl who killed herself two weeks prior, Hannah Baker. There are exactly seven tapes with 13 stories, for 13 people leading to her suicide. In her tapes she holds each one of them responsible for her suicide and each tape will each explain why. Each person must listen and pass on the tapes to the next person on the list. If someone fails to pass on these tapes, an extra set of tapes will be posted publicly along with a map for all her listeners to follow along as they listen.
